Britain at War

For the Americans stationed in Britain during World War II it must have been a shock at times to be virtually in the middle of a war, with bombing raids by the enemy, rationing, the rain and fog, black-outs, and with the British population unaccustomed to these thousands of soldiers.
These pages are to show a little bit about the life of Britons during the war, which was so different from that of the Americans 'stateside'. The soldiers in Britain not only found life strange here, but they were also deeply distressed by the hardships, as expressed, for example, in one letter by Andrew James Scalf, where he writes "I feel so sorry for the women and children of London..."

Follow the links from this page to go on a picture tour through wartime Britain, with comments and some music of the time. Some of the pictures have been taken from Dame Vera Lynn's book "We'll meet again", others were provided by the historian of the 455th AAA, James R Chandler.
